What Podcast Editors Do

What Podcast Editors do

Podcast Editors can take on all kinds of roles.

They can be producers, managers, and even do some audio engineering.

But the true definition of what a person who edits podcasts does is CUT the C.R.A.P.P.

What is C.R.A.P.P.?

Podcast Editors remove, and move, content in a recording.

The improvements make a better experience for the listener or viewer.

Those improvements mostly come in the form of CUTTING out CRAPP:

🩼 CRUTCHES: A word that becomes a filler in conversation, or is used for verbal emphasis, without adding any meaning to an utterance. Click here for a list of examples.

🔃 REPEATS: Duplicate words or phrases that are unnecessary. For example: “I think that I think…”

🙊 ACCIDENTS: It’s human to make mistakes, so Podcast Editors remove them. Some podcasters know to cue their editor about the mistake, others will simply start the sentence over. Or sometimes the dog just has to be put out or collected so they stop barking. (They aren’t barking to be rude, it’s just what dogs do when the Amazon truck pulls into the driveway).

⏯️ PREGNANT______PAUSES: Pauses in speech are normal. Some pauses are dramatic and need to stay in. The long ones that are out-of-place could cause someone to check if their podcast app crashed. Unintentional pregnant pauses are cut down to a more “natural” length (which I have found to always be less than a second, often about .5 seconds).
